Renewable Energy as the Foundation for Sustainable Development
Our renewable energy systems are the foundation of our Sustainable Program Development Model in Malawi. Electricity fuels progress in every area of life; it powers our hospital, supports clean water access, enables education, and drives economic opportunity. When power is available, everything else becomes possible.
Through a combination of solar and wind energy, we’ve created one of the most reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable infrastructure systems in rural Africa. Our renewable energy campus in Malawi operates entirely off grid, using multiple systems to generate and store electricity safely and efficiently.
Our energy network includes four wind turbines, two solar houses, 380 stationary solar panels, and three solar tracking racks. Each of these components plays an essential role in powering our hospital, guest and staff housing, administrative offices, and on-site water systems. The system’s performance is monitored through advanced operational and battery tracking technology, ensuring consistent and dependable power.
Powering Healthcare, Water, and Education
Access to renewable energy makes it possible for us to run critical programs that would otherwise be impossible in remote regions. Our Child Legacy Hospital operates 24 hours a day thanks to this sustainable power system. Electricity supports medical procedures, laboratory testing, lighting, vaccine refrigeration, and emergency care—saving countless lives every year.
Renewable energy also drives our campus clean water systems, which uses solar-powered pumps to draw safe drinking water from deep boreholes. This access reduces waterborne illness and frees families, especially women and children, from walking long distances to fetch unsafe water sources.
Education and vocational training are also made possible by electricity. Our classrooms and training facilities rely on renewable energy to power tools, lighting, and computers. Students learn valuable trades such as electrical work, mechanics, and welding. Skills that open the door to long-term employment and economic independence.
Serving the Unreachable
In Malawi, fewer than 15% of people have access to electricity, and that number drops below 7% in rural areas. Our campuses are beyond the reach of the national power grid. Renewable energy allows us to operate in these remote areas, places previously considered unreachable by both government and other organizations.
By bringing light and energy to these communities, we’re not only improving daily life, but we’re igniting hope. Reliable electricity means students can study after sunset, medical professionals can work through the night, and small businesses can flourish. These opportunities create a ripple effect that strengthens families and builds local economies.
